Upon your first visit to Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ on Stonewall Street, you may wonder if you’re witnessing a new food trend unfold. In the center of each table, there is a circular grill sunken into it. Groups gather around it as they flip their various cuts of meat sizzling in front of them. A server brings by another Frozen Sangria, sake, or frosty Asahi on draft (imported from Japan). We enjoyed our experience, and service was quick.

Sometimes, though, it can be tough to distinguish shiny-and-new establishments from those that are time-tested.
We took advantage of Queens week and gave this awesome restaurant a try.Everyone was very friendly, especially the owner and our server who was also a great singer! All of the meats & the shrimp were seasoned very well. Im thrilled I had an opportunity to try this place and Ill definitely be back to enjoy an all you can eat feast! Not pictures are the salads and smores we were also served as part of the meal. Japanese BBQ is paired with an array of dipping sauces, allowing you to dress each bite with a new spice. But be patient—putting sauce on the meat while it cooks on the grill is a big no-no.
Some of the meats selection was very tender and juicy. In the midst of our meal, fire alarm went off, and we waited 30 minutes outside until the fire Marshall provided clearance to go back in. That didn't affect our 90-minutes allowed.
Things to Know Before Dining at Gyu-Kaku Japanese Barbecue
Plus, Gyu-Kaku celebrates Happy Hour seven days a week with discount on a variety of menu items. Once you’re satisfied with the cook on your meat, use your chopsticks to remove it from the grill. Then, dip it directly into the sauce of your choosing. When ordering by item, be sure to get the restaurant’s best-selling 21-day aged Harami Skirt Steak in Miso marinade. For a more marbled cut, go with the USDA-certified Prime Kalbi Short Rib in Sweet Soy Tare marinade.
Keep an eye on it, though—yakiniku meat is typically cut quite thin; some cuts take only a few minutes to cook. Especially if you want your thin slices of rib and sirloin to have a light sear, don’t get too distracted by the sake and conversation to tend to the grill. More than 70 years old, this style of eating allows you to choose your cuts of premium meats and cook them over a flaming charcoal grill.
Besides the extensive range of beef options, Gyu-Kaku’s menu also features other proteins like Garlic Shrimp, Pork Belly, and Basil Chicken. Remember to save room for dessert, too! No Gyu-Kaku meal is complete without roasting your own marshmallow at your in-table grill and enjoying a fresh, gooey S’more.

Best of all was the empty seat between me and my rowmate. Once I was in my seat, it wasn't as comfortable.
This delay made us miss our connecting flight in Seattle to get home to tuck in our two little toddlers. We ran off the plane and ran across the entire airport trying to make this flight only to get to the gate to see that they have ended boarding. So they were willing to wait for passengers in Hawaii but not Seattle?? Especially when this wasn't even our fault. I expect to receive miles for missing our flight and spending an additional 4 hours in Seattle.
Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl. I suspect i caught flu on this flight as i could hear someone coughing a few rows back and ended up with flu a few days later. Also tiresome to have to watch movies on my device by holding up smartphone screen, would have liked to have in seat display. Like South West(2 check in baggage free) if Alaskan Airlines could give at least one check in baggage free then it would be great. Bad experience with the staff boarding the gate. I couldn’t board with my carry on, personal item and a funny bag. The Dodge House in West Hollywood was considered one of the most architecturally significant American houses of the 20th century. Designed in 1914 and completed in 1916, the masterwork by architect Irving Gill made a profound break from the traditional pitched-roof, symmetrical house design. The money will go to "users of the now-recalled CPAP and other respiratory devices who suffer from significant physical injuries," and to fund research into treating their injuries, the attorneys said. Philips says some 58,000 people have filed claims or registered for the settlement.

The Christopher Dodge House bed & breakfast is operated by local knowledgeable staff. They are happy to offer recommendations for dining and local attractions. The FDA accuses Philips of not taking appropriate action about the dangers of the degrading foam in its CPAP and ventilator devices despite learning about the risk as early as 2015.
How far is Christopher Dodge House from the center of Providence?
That year, the FDA said in a letter to the company, a Philips subsidiary began a preventative procedure because of complaints about the foam breaking down. The agency says it learned about the matter when the FDA inspected a manufacturing plant in Murrysville, Pa., in 2021. U.S. sales of Philips' popular DreamStation and other respiratory units are currently on hold; the company says it plans to resume selling the devices once it has satisfied the terms of a consent decree with the U.S. government. People who suspect they own or use one of the affected devices should act soon to verify that if they haven't already, the FDA says. The agency notes that Philips' recall page offers ways to check serial numbers and register a product.

This film, produced by architectural historian Esther McCoy, documents the Walter Luther Dodge house in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, and the life of its architect, Irving John Gill. The film was made to advocate for its preservation during a 7-year battle to save it fropm the wrecking ball. This film, created to help save the house, now serves as the building’s best surviving visual record. For more information on Dodge House and Esther McCoy, see her papers at the Archives of American Art. The board later changed its mind about building a school on the property. In 1963, the land was rezoned so that the house could be replaced with apartments.

It was the retirement home of Walter Dodge, the millionaire inventor of a foot treatment called Tiz. Morrison McKenna who owned it until 1939 when the Los Angeles Board of Education unilaterally condemned it, forcing McKenna to sell it. According to a history compiled by legendary architecture writer Esther McCoy in documents now stored with the Library of Congress, Dodge sold his house to T. To their objection, the Los Angeles High School District condemned the property in 1939, and with a $69,000 payment to the McKennas, the district took control of the property. The capital of the smallest state in the country, Providence is densely populated and chock full of interesting things to see and do, such as the Riverwalk, historic buildings dating back to pre-revolutionary times, and the oldest Baptist church in America. Of course, those used to a grid system may get a little lost walking the streets of Providence, which seem to have no rhyme or reason to the way they run.
This room is stocked with infused water, tea, coffee, and a variety of honor system items, including locally bottled Yacht Club Soda. The recall also covers some models of Philips' more complicated BiPAP ventilators, which facilitate both inhalation and exhalation and routinely cost hundreds of dollars more. Last June, the White House said President Biden was using a CPAP machine to help with sleep apnea.
The Providence Place Mall is less than a mile from this bed and breakfast. The recall was triggered by thousands of health complaints from CPAP users. An investigation found that a polyester-based polyurethane foam built into the devices to dampen sound and vibration also had a risk of breaking down — especially when used in warm and humid conditions. That settlement is worth a minimum of $613.3 million, including $94.4 million in attorneys' fees.
Each of the bedrooms had a deck or balcony as well as its own bathroom with a skylight. Today, the building retains much of its original charm (thanks to careful restoration), such as the tall tin-capped ceilings and marble fireplace mantels. Early American antique-replica furnishings create a homey feel in the lobby, where a traditional wood-burning stove provides comfort in cold months, allowing guests to gather round and pretend they've stepped back in time. The plan to fix machines with the problem call for replacing the polyester-based foam with one that uses silicone as its base. Philips announced the new settlement on Monday, along with its first-quarter financial results.

Servers arrive tableside with a tray of raw steaks that they show off like a newborn babe, headlined by the A5 striploin from Hyogo prefecture Japan for $33 an ounce. These Miami steakhouses serve all the best cuts, plus potent drinks, killer views and excellent people-watching. Michael Mina manages to snag two spots on this list, thanks to his steakhouse in the Fontainebleau. And second, the steak selection here is second to none, boasting the usual lineup of Moyer Farms Angus plus three cuts of Wagyu, A4 and A5 Miyazaki cuts, a 50-ounce Aussie Tomahawk, and a 32-ounce Bone-in Ribeye.
The steak is perfect for two people, and in case you forgot what kind of steakhouse this is, it’s plated on top of aji amarillo sauce. It’s a spectrum that ranges from $1,000 steaks in a clubstaurant to restaurants that have served us pre-packaged grocery salad kits. And even though the places on this guide are all quite different themselves—Korean, Argentinian, Peruvian, and more—they deliver the kind of moments a proper steakhouse should. Each serves red meat cooked with surgical precision, accompanied by sides like chimichurri, mac and cheese, and an overwhelming amount of potatoes.
Even if you couldn’t care less about the fact that Shaq is sitting 15 feet away, you will be excited about the perfectly cooked ribeye in the center of the table, surrounded by good steakhouse staples served in hilariously large portions. Edge is consistent, which makes it a very safe pick anytime you need a fancy steak dinner that still feels safe for clients or in-laws. Start with the really good charcuterie plate full of house sausage, various hams, and pickled things. Then, you can’t really go wrong with any of the steaks, especially the wagyu churrasco. It’s perfectly cooked to your liking, has a great sear, and is super flavorful despite being such a lean cut.
EDGE Steak & Bar
Start with Thick-cut Bacon and Blackened Sea Scallops, and move onto one of their simple-yet-elegant steaks, drizzling it with a little truffle black pepper and parmesan butter. Because it’s in the ‘burbs, the prices are a bit lower, too—and while we wouldn’t exactly call it budget dining, it’s definitely the city’s top steakhouse value. This is the place for somebody who prefers their steakhouse presented like a 1970s disco-fueled supper club. A windowless basement below a Brickell highrise, Dirty French feels like a party at all hours of the day, like the clock is always set to 2am and you’re about to start a week-long bender.

Plus, the by-the-glass selection here is actually by-the-quartino, which means that you’re getting a quarter of a bottle of wine for around $14-$18. They’re rolled, filled with dulce de leche, and flambรฉed tableside with orange liqueur. Nestled in the Diplomat Beach Resort lobby, this award-winning steakhouse marries a sophisticated ambiance with top-tier seafood and aged in-house steak dining. The wine lists boats with more than 500 varietals in addition to an extensive cocktail menu. If you’ve talked to literally anyone who's been to Argentina, odds are they’ve blabbed to no end about the world-class steak dinner they enjoyed, complete with bountiful wine and maybe even a tango lesson, all for like $11.
You’ll find this massive, shiny steakhouse inside the Turnberry Resort in Aventura. The host stand is made entirely of wine corks, and you’ll have to pass by multiple wine walls on the way to your table. But even if you don’t want to drink, the food lives up to its high price point. The meal starts with complimentary duck fat fries, but you're here for steak. They’re all prime cuts, plus there’s a Japanese wagyu, an Australian wagyu, and even a Colorado bison filet on the menu. It doesn't come with sides, so get the creamed spinach or truffle mac and cheese.
Honored with numerous accolades - including a Michelin star, James Beard Foundation award, Bon Appรฉtit Chef of the Year award, and many more - Chef Mina continues to dazzle the culinary world with bold dining concepts. Our event spaces can accommodate from 18 to 400+ guests for partial or full venue buyouts. But even Mickey Mouse will have to leave his mouse ears behind if he wants to get a table at the restaurant, which has a strict dress code and doesn't allow children under 10.
The cuts are prime, the sides are incredible and the whole thing feels like you’ve just been to a Broadway show. Peter Vauthy is nothing if not resilient, as he refused to let onetime-hotspot Red die when its corporate structure fell apart. Partnering with a longtime regular, the chef opened this new location on South Pointe Drive, and kept the Certified Angus steak train chugging along. The new-and-improved Red maintains the original’s sweeping menu, truly offering something for everyone whether it’s Lobster fra Diavolo, Veal and Beef Bolognese, and Meatballs smothered in his signature Red Lead Sauce. That’s why Red doubles as one of the city’s top Italian joints too, but you’d be remiss to ignore the Dry-aged Bone-in Kansas City Strip’s or Prime Filet’s meaty calls. While the crowd does skew older, Christy’s is just that wonderful breed of traditional steakhouse we don’t see much of these days.

Set to debut this weekend on the building’s first floor, Elastika is helmed by Executive Chef Joe Anthony and draws inspiration from Miami’s international culture and the Moore’s century-long history. The restaurant is named after the Zaha Hadid sculpture “Elastika,” which is suspended in the four-story atrium above the dining room and was originally commissioned for the inaugural Design Miami/ exhibition in 2005. The Moore building in the Miami Design District is back after being closed for renovations — and is now set to be home to Elastika, a new modern-American restaurant, alongside a private members club, boutique hotel, executive offices, and gallery space. Chef Michael Mina’s culinary and business vision led to the founding of his company, MINA Group, which has opened over 45 operations around the world.

If corporate cards are present and per diems generous, also get the lobster pot pie that’s prepared tableside with large chunks of lobster and spoonfuls of brandied lobster cream. Cote is the only Korean steakhouse in Miami, and you can watch four different kinds of American Wagyu, seven USDA prime cuts, and five A5 selections cook right in the center of the table. Although if you order all of that expect to spend somewhere around a trillion dollars.
Bourbon Steak
The Major Food Group folks (Carbone, Contessa, et al), have put together a steakhouse best-of menu, headlined by a beautiful hunk of house-special prime rib. It’s all delivered by a pro team of servers wearing the most baller pink tuxes with frilly shirts this side of '79. Major Food Group’s opulent and purposely over-the-top steakhouse, Dirty French Steakhouse, might be a New York City import, but this location is distinctly Miami.
You won’t get quite that experience at PM, but its selection of steaks, rare wines, and rustic brick ranch vibes give it a genuine Argentine ambience. The meats are aged in-house, creating a savory, smoky flavor exclusive to the restaurant. Kick things off with an ocean fresh Ceviche, or the Char-grilled Provoleta Cheese—the most true-to-form dish on the steadfastly regional menu. Prime 112 is a South Beach classic that’s been doing the sceney steakhouse thing long before it was so ubiquitous. This place is a favorite of NBA and NFL players visiting Miami, so there is a chance you’ll sit near a power forward or ESPN talking head. Muscular celebrities aside, the people watching is great and even getting sent to the bar to wait for your table (inevitable if you’re visiting on the weekend) is enjoyable thanks to the free bar bacon.

But considering the deep list of well-sourced steaks here, it’s still better than most steakhouses and doing the steakhouse thing. Expect wagyu, cuts from the foreign lands of Australia and sides that are more creative than your average creamed spinach, like Gratitude Gardens-sourced mushrooms with a caramelized onion puree. Maybe you’ve done the Korean barbecue thing before, where meats are cooked at a charcoal grill in the center of a table in a suburban strip mall restaurant. Cote is a trendier, more elegant version of that—and a whole lot better. Here, servers conduct a well-choreographed dance to and from your table to drop, turn and plate each beautifully marbled piece of meat.

Consistency is key, and over the decade EDGE has been in business, it’s delivered standout steaks marked by little deviation and much satisfaction. This longevity—in Miami terms, anyway—is due in large part to the workmanship of Aaron Brooks, who’s stayed put at the Four Seasons plating up Aussie Lamb, inventive desserts, and Creekstone Farms steaks that never disappoint. EDGE is also the lone steakhouse on this list dually responsible for one of Miami’s best burgers, making this an equally fantastic spot for lunch as it is for dinner. Famed chef Laurent Tourondel’s casual steakhouse is not only one of the best picks on Ocean Drive it also offers some of the best steak selections around. Choose from a variety of USDA prime or certified black angus steaks before picking from one of its six sauces to go with the beef like green onion-ranch shallot, jalapeรฑo chimichurri, or peppercorn-armagnac. When the meal was finally complete, the star put the food into a storage container and was planning to “sneak” into her work and give it to her.
Graziano's Restaurant Coral Gables
It ticks all the right steakhouse boxes with attentive service, a big selection of prime cuts, plenty of sides, and a very nice wine list. It’s perfect for a nice date, a family night out, or dinner with a group of friends. The restaurant has “weekly experiences'' like surf and turf specials and live music on Thursdays. But the best day to go is Tuesday, when a $180 64oz tomahawk steak is marked down to $150—and comes with a salad, one side, and dessert.
If you are, in fact, trying to go big, get the $225 per person steak omakase. But the butcher’s feast tasting menu is a little more affordable at around $74 per person. It includes four cuts that are flipped and twirled by a team more in sync than a certain boy band of a similar name. Plus, it comes with banchan, scallion salad, and a savory egg souffle.
With some of the best service in the city—not to mention the chance to watch cruise ships roll by as you enjoy your Filet-au-Poivre—dinner at Smith’s is a decidedly pleasant experience. An outdoor happy hour featuring cheap drinks and that same sunny panorama doesn’t hurt, either. Miami’s most famous steakhouses tend to give off the energy of a baller bachelor party. These are gorgeous dining rooms dripping in chandeliers with martini service and slabs of meat as marbled as a Grecian statue. They range in price point, too, though naturally, you won’t find many budget options on this decadent list. Below, pull up a seat for our guide to the best steakhouses in Miami.
Though the risk of contamination is very low, officials say technicians worked through Monday night to flush hydrants and take field measurements of drinking water quality. More than 260 locations are being sampled to ensure normal water quality. Charlotte Water (CLTWater) crews responded to a large water main break on Remount Road.

InvestigateWithin hours, a field technician investigates and attempts to repair if it is an easy fix. If it is a leak that requires a construction crew, the technician prioritizes the leak based on severity. Many repairs require coordination with other departments or towns to minimize the impact on customers or drivers. The new service will allow Charlotte water to have the ability to call, text and email customers to provide information on service outages and emergency incidents. Crews have since closed valves to isolate the break and begun the process of restoring service to several impacted zip codes.

This will minimize filling the hot water tank with turbid water. If you are washing clothes at the time, it is better to stop the cycle while it is full and wait until clean water is available to finish. If you allow the water to empty from the washing machine and go into the spin cycle it is more likely to cause permanent staining to the laundry items.
(WBTV) - Charlotte Water implemented a new alert system on Thursday to notify customers of impacts on their water service. Officials say CLTWater has not received any reports of illness due to drinking water before or during the advisory. Samples are also being sent to the laboratory to confirm field testing results. We talked about the warm leather accent in every space, and in the kitchen we see it in the barstools. The hardware looks like it belongs on a piece of furniture and the build is more grand than most. We carried both natural wood and black throughout the home, so we used both in the vanity. It’s enhanced by the chevron tile on the floor, and grid tile on the walls. The room has an angle, which we used to place two pieces from Block Shop Textiles. We love their graphic pattern framed in a light natural wood to complement the structural wood desk.

Here, street shoes are traded for soft felt slippers, which also help to protect the home’s immaculate, pale resin floors. New Hardie® Plank Lap Siding and Hardie® Panel Vertical Siding, both in Aged Pewter, is a smart solution that will stand up to the elements. Removing the retaining wall in the front of the home opens up the patio and makes the front door feel more approachable. And the rear exterior design makes full use of the lakeside setting with the deck and walkway out to the built-in firepit.

The Scandinavian design movement centers around simplicity, minimalism and functionality. And everything from glassware, lighting, and furniture took on a whole new look. IKEA is by far the most recognized name to bring beautiful and functional everyday objects to the masses. Students learned the principles of architecture, sculpture, and painting with crafts and engineering. According to metmuseum.org, the preliminary courses were taught by visual artists like Paul Klee, Vasily Kandinsky, and Josef Albers and included the study of materials, color theory, and formal relationships. Not only does this home celebrate its enviable location, but it also enhances it. The house is formed as two distinct horizontal layers—solid and transparent—in response to the beachy terrain and expansive views. One enters on the ground floor into a light-colored masonry plinth that rises up from the sandy shore. This spectacular modern lakeshore house designed by Woodhouse Tinucci Architects along with Amy Kartheiser Design is nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois.

The architect has distilled the adjacent bath to a set of bare surfaces. The flip of a switch causes two glass floor hatches to open, revealing a bath and shower basin—submerged to preserve the view. Across from the bath, a long glass wall pivots easily by hand, enabling a portion of the house to open outward, fanlike, toward the lake. A sky-blue curtain by Dutch designer Petra Blaisse slips between the sleeping area and the living space; a circular “oculus” in the fabric adds another lens to the optical array.

It is his first built house in almost three decades—his most recent, the Maison ร Bordeaux was completed in 1998; it was preceded by the Dutch House in 1995, and the Villa dall’Ava in 1991. Created in close collaboration with architect Federico Pompignoli, this home marks a surprising evolution in the career of one of the world’s most celebrated designers. Install a deep soaking tub with a view if possible, coupled with a rainfall shower for an ultimate sense of luxury. We’ll use natural stone tiles to continue our theme of blending the outdoors with the interior and add plenty of plush towels and perhaps some greenery to keep the room feeling fresh and calming. We designed the open cabinets with a bit of a broken grid detail and a large void for artwork.
We should not forget about the garage type; whether it’s attached or detached can affect both the design and function. For those who view their lake house as a cottage, cozy and intimate spaces with multifunctional furniture are ideal for optimizing smaller square footage while maintaining comfort and style. This adorable lakeside cottage got a modern upgrade with the use of new building materials. Slate blue hand-split shake siding looks gorgeous on the upper level with a soft blue-gray on the lower level siding.
These innovative designs create the illusion of a floating structure, often utilizing stilts or incorporating glass floors to allow unobstructed views of the water below. This design concept is ideal for those who want to make a bold architectural statement while enjoying the serenity of a waterfront location. Choosing the right colors and textures is essential to achieving a sleek and stylish look in your waterfront modern lake house. Opt for neutral color palettes that reflect the natural surroundings and allow the beauty of the lake to take center stage. Incorporate textures such as natural stone, metal accents, and floor-to-ceiling glass to add depth and visual interest to your design.
Bright white trim (Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore) makes the accents pop. We used the elevations of this new build to create a three-sided, full-color visualization of a modern rustic lake house. If you look closely, you can see that the above renderings are in Benjamin Moore’s Charcoal Slate, while the closeups of the front and lakeside views of the home below are in Sherwin Williams’ Urbane Bronze. This inspired our designers to make use of thick wooden columns and accents grounded in gorgeous stone veneer.
“How amazing to shower or bathe with the sun beaming in on you,” states designer Amy Kartheiser. Operable doors allow for the breeze and sounds of the lake to permeate the upstairs. While providing access to the private exterior decks facing both the lake and garden. On the first level, a monumentally scaled sash window opens onto a terrace where a Rimini deck chair by Jan Kurtz takes in the Alpine vista across the lake. This is the scene witnessed from the Austrian House, the latest residence by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.
Install a spacious deck or patio, incorporate comfortable outdoor furniture, and consider adding features such as an outdoor kitchen or a fire pit to create a welcoming and functional outdoor living area. New upper level vertical siding and lower level stone veneer makes this modern lake home’s exterior feel more finished. Same with fresh walnut stain on the decking and the walkway idea that leads to a lovely outdoor dining area. To furnish a lake house on a budget, opt for rustic-chic wooden or vintage style decor, utilize thrifted items, and repurpose materials like using a canoe as a conversation piece or distressed wood stools for a cozy feel.

Instead of wall paneling, we went with a dark grasscloth to give the space texture and dimension. We designed a floating marble vanity and wall mounted sinks with a natural wood shelf to tie into the rest of the home. Consider installing solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and a well-insulated building envelope to make your lake house energy-efficient. These features will reduce your environmental footprint and lower your energy bills in the long run. Architect Ken Ungar, whose portfolio largely features high-end modern farmhouse-style residences, will design a home for the couple, Architectural Digest reported.

Intentional selections for lighting, the front door, and copper gutters are the touches that make the exterior feel cohesively designed. The before photo of this lake house looks like a nice place to hang out, sure — but the after image is The Place to Be. Swapping out the small awning over the deck for a more permanent, extended structure provides all sorts of covered seating, with a view. However, our favorite might be the lakeside sitting area complete with a portable fire pit, gorgeous decking, and built-in seating and planters. Decorate a lake house by blending decor with the surrounding nature, using light wood, nautical themes, and incorporating shades of blue. Focus on creating a serene oasis that promotes indoor-outdoor living and celebrates the waterfront view.
While it's common to see Cottage, Rustic, and Modern lake house plans, you'll also find a variety of other popular styles too. They often feature large windows offering water views and functional outdoor spaces for enjoying nature. A Marcel Breuer–designed tubular steel writing desk and chair, and a freestanding mattress, are all that occupy the lofty sleeping area.
Interior Design Elements
Building regulations and permit requirements vary depending on your location. It’s essential to consult with local authorities and obtain the necessary permits before starting any construction or renovation project. They can guide setback requirements, environmental considerations, and other regulations specific to waterfront properties.

In one corner, a trapezoidal opening cut high into the concrete walls offers a glimpse into the sauna and adjacent shower. In the opposite corner, a short run of steps leads up to a darkened corridor that tunnels deeper into the hillside. A 90-degree turn at the end reveals a steep and narrow staircase, and, at the landing, a solid door. A lake house can be a good investment, offering potential for rental income and property value appreciation, but it’s important to consider factors like location, accessibility, and market demand.

6 Under-the-Radar Locations to Build a Lake House in the Midwest.
There were a lot of cold elements in the space, so we knew we wanted natural wood cabinets to tie in the other natural wood throughout the home. The single-story home and its grounds have since been cleared and in its place will be a massive home in the modern farmhouse style that has come to dominate US suburbs. Chris Pratt has drawn ire from architecture aficionados after news broke that the actor and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, had razed a historic, mid-century modern home to make way for a sprawling 15,000-sq-ft mansion.
A gabled deck overhang with trim in a near-black matches the new trim on the deck itself. Lastly, a gray-and-taupe stone veneer on the lower level completes the modern update. The biggest change we made to this lake home was to enclose the massive breezeway with a screened-in porch. This update maximizes outdoor living space while providing protection from bugs and pests. A patio visualization to the right may be the preferred option on cool, insect-free mornings. Finally, a fresh paint color palette with Sherwin Williams’ Oyster Bay on the siding and Greek Villa on the trim and shutters is subdued and airy, perfect for this environment.
There's also an outdoor dining/living area under the master bedroom wing that reveals the board-formed concrete retaining walls and the oaks of the 'backyard'. Upstairs the bedrooms, office and media room are warm and cozy respites from the communal space below. Lake houses are designed to be oriented for views, so at least one wall—typically the back wall—will have plenty of windows/patio doors to let in sights and natural light. Lake-style homes also usually place a deck beyond the wall of windows to blur the line between indoors and out and allow you to enjoy your property to the fullest.
On the rare occasion a Lautner home hits the market, a flurry of interest is generated almost immediately and often followed by a real estate bidding war. For example, Silvertop, also known as the Reiner-Burchill Residence, sold for $8.55M, (that’s 14% over the asking price) to Luke Wood, the president of Beats By Dre, in a fierce bidding war. Mid-century modern is more than just a home designed by Richard Neutra or any of the other great modernist architects. Warm cedar on the exterior facades of the upper pavilion gives way to bleached wood walls and floors, while downstairs wood ceilings and bluestone floors anchor the mass and materiality of the plinth. Across from the kitchen, the ceiling rises above a large upholstered bed strewn with cushions for lounging. To one side, structural glass plates support the translucent, pale-green grating of the floor above.
We used a local and renowned artist, Holly Addi for an original piece for the space. One of the most striking moments in the home is the full slab marble fire place. Typically, if we have the space to do a bench at the end of the bed, we will. Large enough to do a full on daybed at the end, which is perfect for relaxing in the space.
This area can serve as a place to sleep if there are a lot of guests, and creates another space for them to just relax and chill. We fell in love with this couch and designed the room with it as the jumping off point. The office was the perfect space to go dark with shou sugi ban built-ins, an Apparatus light, and grid paneling. We were in love with the tonal color palette in the vintage rug we sourced for the space. Most concrete block (CMU) homes have 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 exterior walls on the 2nd story.
Clean lines and uncluttered spaces are at the heart of our modern aesthetic, with every element serving a purpose. We choose contemporary furnishings and decor that offer both functionality and stylish minimalism. The color palette gravitates towards neutral colors that enhance the sense of calm and relaxation, while distinctive textures add depth without overwhelming the senses. Our modern lake house designs are both refined and welcoming, encapsulating the essence of sophisticated lakefront living.
Our designers turned this normal house front elevation design into a full-color rendering with a modern mountain aesthetic. A combination of vertical and horizontal lap siding in Benjamin Moore’s Black Beauty is dark and moody but is balanced by a lighter stone siding accent and lots of warm wood elements. It was most recently home to the late Hilda Rolfe, the widow of Sam Rolfe, co-creator of the series The Man from Uncle. Video of the property from December 2022 shows a light-filled home that appears to have been well-preserved, with large windows, wood floors and mid-century furniture.

"I'm an intelligence officer ... to me, the intelligence was there that this was going to be a big deal," he said, citing the civil unrest in November and December when Trump supporters came to Washington. In addition to serving on the Capitol Police Board, the sergeant at arms served with the Senate sergeant at arms and the Architect of the Capitol on the Capitol Guide Board. This board oversaw the Capitol Guide Service, which provided tours of the Capitol to visitors and special services to tourists.
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said in a post on X that the House Sergeant at Arms warned that he would be fined $500 if he did not delete a video post. The video features footage of lawmakers waving Ukrainian flags on the House floor. The sergeant at arms is the chief law enforcement and protocol officer of the House of Representatives, according to the House's official website. In that position, McFarland is tasked with overseeing "all issues relating to the safety and security of Members of Congress and the Capitol complex." As the chief law enforcement officer of the House, the sergeant at arms is responsible for security in the House wing of the United States Capitol, the House office buildings, and on adjacent grounds. Under the direction of the speaker of the House or other presiding officer, the sergeant at arms plays an integral role in maintaining order and decorum in the House chamber.

The Senate sergeant-at-arms reports to the Senate majority leader; in the days leading up to and including Jan. 6, that was Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell. Capitol security is provided by the sergeants-at-arms , who are the chief law enforcement officers for the House and Senate, in coordination with the Capitol Police, a federal law enforcement agency. The sergeants-at-arms are responsible for security in their respective chambers and related office buildings, while Mr. Sund oversaw more than 1,800 Capitol Police personnel. The sergeant at arms is also responsible for ensuring the safety and security of members of Congress, the congressional staff, visiting dignitaries, and tourists. Toward this end, the sergeant at arms works in concert with the Senate sergeant at arms and the Architect of the Capitol.

“Upon viewing Rep. Massie’s tweet, our team reached out to the Sergeant at Arms. I do not agree with this assessment and there will be no fine imposed on Rep. Massie,” Johnson revealed in a tweet of his own. They should be fined and kicked out for betraying the American people. I’ll be writing a $500 check to cover my friend Thomas Massie’s fine. Massie has not said if he will pay the fine or take down the video. Massie’s surreal video, filmed from the House floor, appears to be in violation of House rules, although the rule is routinely violated.

But surprisingly, the speaker’s tweet prompted pushback as well, with critics saying they didn’t believe him given as he’d orchestrated last week’s passage of yet another giant foreign aid bill. McFarland formally notified House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, of a subpoena on Monday. Details about the subpoena, including the investigation to what it is related to, remained unknown, causing some legal experts and political observers to speculate about what it could be about. This author isn’t inherently offended by someone flying the flag of another country. We could imagine some Americans (including Congresspersons) waiving British flags during World War II as a sign of friendship and solidarity even before we entered the war, and many friends have been flying the Israeli flag, particularly since October 7, 2023. Brian Levin, director for the study of hate and extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, said state officials would be wise to set up bigger perimeters around their capitols and warn state workers, because there could be “a cascading” of threats down from the federal level as targets like the U.S.

I believe to be fined, they have to serve you notice on the floor while it’s happening (that’s how I was fined for not wearing a mask). Since Biden’s election, the Highway Patrol and local Sacramento police have enhanced their presence around the Capitol as pro-Trump protesters and small groups of anti-fascist counter-protesters have broken into fights on a near-weekly basis. Police have closed surrounding streets to through traffic to prevent what has become a regular parade of music-blaring pro-Trump supporters cruising around the Capitol in their vehicles, as well as less frequent but similar events by counter-protesters.
A Shasta County supervisors’ meeting was faced with verbal threats to government officials and talk of civil war. Around noon, when an anti-vaccine group was scheduled to protest, dozens of California Highway Patrol officers were scattered in clusters around the grounds. Near the main entrance, walkways that would normally be crowded with legislators, staffers and visitors were blocked with barricades and closely watched by officers in plainclothes, in uniform and mounted on horses. The House Vacancy Announcement and Placement Service ("HVAPS") assists House members, committees and leadership by posting job vacancies and maintaining a resume bank. HVAPS provides confidential referral of resumes when House offices request them.
Some social media users speculated about whether the subpoena could be related to January 6, 2021, Capitol riot investigations. During the riot, a group of former President Donald Trump's supporters violently protested the 2020 presidential election results after Trump claimed without evidence that the election was stolen from him due to widespread voter fraud. House of Representatives Sergeant at Arms William McFarland announced his office was served a grand jury subpoena by the Department of Justice (DOJ), sparking a wave of theories on social media on Monday afternoon. There is a fine in the rules for taking pictures/videos on the House floor, but they don’t know if I taped this, and democrats post from the floor frequently (example attached). Capitol to be breached last week remain under investigation, authorities there — including the chief of the U.S. House and Senate have come under intense scrutiny for not being more prepared.
Roy said he and Boebert summoned Johnson to the chair to address the Democrats. “It is in violation of decorum to wave flags on the floor,” a beaming Johnson eventually told the group over a minute after they began waving flags. Democrats appeared to violate House rules themselves by waving flags on the House floor, although none appear to have publicly disclosed they have been fined. "The House sergeant at arms... DOJ documents... grand jury subpoena...Hmmm... sounds like some congressional insurrectionist are soon about to find out..." posted user @HadleySheley.
